“Marty Supreme” Ties Record for Most Losses in BAFTA History

According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, “Marty Mauser” has faced another defeat, but this time at an awards ceremony. The sports dramedy Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie, left the BAFTA Awards empty-handed this past Sunday night. Despite entering the evening with 11 nominations, the film failed to secure a single win, tying the record for the most losses in a single night.

Heading into the ceremony, Safdie’s film was widely expected to win in several categories, including Best Actor for Timothée Chalamet. Chalamet has been a dominant force this awards season, having already picked up Critics Choice and Golden Globe awards, making him a top Oscar contender. However, in one of the night’s biggest upsets, Robert Aramayo took home the trophy for his performance in I Swear.

Marty Supreme now shares a record with Women in Love (1969) and Finding Neverland (2004), which were previously the only films to receive 11 BAFTA nominations without a single win. Notably, both of those films went on to win an Oscar: Glenda Jackson won Best Actress for Women in Love, and Jan A.P. Kaczmarek won Best Original Score for Finding Neverland.

Safdie, a BAFTA voter himself, held the highest number of individual nominations this year across his roles as director, producer, writer, and editor.

Despite this setback, Marty Supreme remains a formidable Oscar contender. History shows that a poor showing at the BAFTAs does not necessarily preclude Oscar success. In 2023, Everything Everywhere All at Once won only one BAFTA (for Film Editing) before sweeping seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and three acting awards. Similarly, Moonlight (2017) failed to win any BAFTAs but ultimately secured the Oscar for Best Picture.

Nevertheless, the negative momentum surrounding Marty Supreme is unwelcome news for Chalamet—who is campaigning hard for his first Oscar—and the strategists at A24. The film was nominated at the BAFTAs for Best Film, Director, Leading Actor (Chalamet), Supporting Actress (Odessa A’zion), Casting, Original Screenplay, Production Design, Cinematography, Costume Design, Editing, and Makeup & Hair. It currently holds 9 Academy Award nominations.

The 98th Academy Awards will be held on March 15, 2026, hosted by Conan O’Brien and broadcast live on ABC.
